Bizzell Supports HBCU Campus Dialogue on Prescription Drugs

Bizzell Supports HBCU Campus Dialogue on Prescription Drugs

The Bizzell Group (Bizzell) supports The National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE) with its recruitment of students, staff, and faculty from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for an open dialogue on prescription drugs. The event LET’S TALK ABOUT IT: Prescription Drug Use and Its Side Effects is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The groups will discuss current campus trends, explore beliefs about substance abuse and addiction, and discover on- and off-campus prevention, treatment and recovery services.  There will be two sessions – one for faculty and staff on Friday, March 28th and one for students on Saturday, March 29th.

Research suggests that there are varied motivations for prescription drug abuse among teens and college-aged students, including getting high, coping with pain or sleep problems and in some instances improving or enhancing cognition.  These behaviors are risky as medications prescribed by doctors are assumed to be safe, however abuse of these drugs can have harmful health effects, including overdose.  This discussion seeks to open a dialogue among students and health professionals to combat myths and generalizations about prescription drug misuse.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to RSVP by March 21, 2014 for the event on March 28th from 10 am – 3 pm.  Students should RSVP by March 25, 2014 for the event on March 29th from 11 am – 4 pm. Interested participants should RSVP by calling 202.806.7706 or emailing dm_barnes@howard.edu.

Both sessions will take place at The Gallery Lounge in the Blackburn Center at Howard University, 2400 Sixth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20059. Participants are advised that this counts as a community service activity and resume-builder.  Limited seating is available. Lunch and parking will be provided.

December 10, 2013 – Opioid analgesics have become controversial drugs that are widely used for the management of moderate to severe pain, but are widely abuse and diverted for non-medical purposes. While there has been a marked decrease in the use of some illegal drugs, data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) show that nearly one-third of people aged 12 and over who used drugs for the first time in 2009 began by using a prescription drug non-medically.

Addressing the prescription drug abuse epidemic is a top priority for The Bizzell Group (Bizzell). Our staff designs, develops, and delivers specialized training and technical assistance for health care providers—from physicians to psychologists, social workers, substance abuse treatment staff, and peer counselors. We understand which tools and resources are the most effective for reaching and communicating with multiple specialized audiences including adults, teens, teachers, and medical professionals. In addition, we support the development and dissemination of sound educational programs for not only health providers, but also for the American public and other stakeholders.

“We provide comprehensive programs of support for efforts to reduce the burden of prescription drug use, misuse, and abuse on the American people”, says Anton Bizzell, MD, Bizzell’s CEO. “Currently, we are offering technical assistance and training that includes developing education courses for physicians, developing educational materials for dissemination, conducting literature reviews and analyses, developing and compiling best practices materials, and providing logistical support for meetings across the U.S”.

November 1, 2013 – Through a contract awarded by U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID), The Bizzell Group (Bizzell) provides the agency with short-term technical assistance designed to develop and facilitate gender trainings for the more than 450 USAID Developmental Leadership Initiative (DLI) Interns. The DLIs, located in missions around the world, work in areas of Global Health, Agriculture, Economics, Democracy and Governance.

Through our technical assistance, Bizzell is helping to train DLIs on the status of all new initiatives, strategies, and policies within USAID and U. S. Government that relate to gender integration, gender based violence, and Women, Peace, and Security as well as F Gender Indicators, and Operational Plans, Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Indicators and budget attributions.

As a result of our involvement in the program, we are helping DLIs to increase their knowledge about strategies for integrating gender equality and female empowerment into Mission strategic frameworks, Country Development Cooperation Strategies (CDCS), evaluations, work plans, scopes of work, requests for assistance and proposals, and briefing documents. During the 2013 calendar year, Bizzell staff provided trainings in Bangkok, Thailand in January and September, as well as developed training for local USAID staff in the Washington, DC area. Future considerations for trainings include Budapest, Prague, Mozambique, Morocco, and the Middle East.
